Scope and Contents

Photocopy of diary by Hanson describing his participation in the Brigham Young Academy South American Expedition. Diary documents his activities beginning from his departure from Castledale, Utah on April 23, 1900 until his return on August 28, 1900 from southern Arizona. Describes the movements and activities of the party, interactions with local Mormon groups in Utah and Arizona, relationships between party members, and the role of Joseph F. Smith and the Church leadership in supporting the expedition.

Biographical History

Paul Soren Hanson (1875-1960) was a stockman and local ecclesiastical leader in Utah.

Paul Soren Hanson was born on April 25, 1875, in Fountain Green, Utah to Soren Hansen and Maren Mortensen. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1883, and was an active member. He married Clarissa (Clara) Ellis Seeley (1879-1948) on June 15, 1899 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and they had nine children together. In 1900, Hanson was selected to participate in the Brigham Young Academy South American Expedition, but returned prior to their crossing into Mexico.

Hanson lived in Castledale and Roosevelt, Utah, where he worked in the stock-raising business. In 1917 he was called to serve as a missionary in the Northern States Mission, and returned in 1919. He was then called to serve as the bishop of the Roosevelt 1st Ward, serving from 1920 to 1923. Hanson died on April 19, 1960 in Roosevelt, Utah.
