Lancelot Walton letter
Scope and Contents note
Lancelot Walton writes to William Hepworth Dixon, author of New America. New America is a book about the Salt Lake Community, with many chapters on marriage and polygamy. Dixon named the Parsees as an example of a group that practices polygamy.
Lancelot Walton was upset about Dixon’s statement. His letter quotes from a pamphlet called Manners and Customs of the Parsee to prove that Parsee do not practice polygamy. There is neither bigamy nor polygamy amongst the Parsees. They are simple monogamists. p 15. (p. 3 of letter).
The letter was written March 10, 1867. 4 pages.
