Scope and Contents
The Aretta Young Poems, 1883-1917, include two archival series: (1) Poems, 1883-1917 and (2) Photograph, Undated. Some poems were written about and dedicated to Karl G. Maeser on behalf of the students and faculty of Brigham Young Academy.

Biographical / Historical
Elizabeth Aretta Young (1864-1923), known as Aretta throughout her life, was born in St. Charles, Idaho, to Franklin Wheeler Young and Anna Maria Sabin. Aretta graduated from Brigham Young Academy High School in 1884 with her normal diploma. She later received a certificate in physical geography, a teacher's certificate, and Bachelor of Pedagogy degree, all from Brigham Young Academy. Aretta's professional career also began at Brigham Young Academy where she taught art and reading beginning in 1885. She left BYA for a brief period to teach in Fremont, Utah. There she became the principal of the LDS Seminary. However, she returned to teaching at Brigham Young Academy in 1897, continuing until her death in 1923. Throughout her years of teaching, she wrote poetry and other literature, some of which was published in the 1899 Young Women's Journal. She died in Provo on March 25, 1923.
