Administrative History

The city of Mapleton began as an agricultural extension of nearby Springville, Utah. Water rights and availability was a central issue in Mapleton's history, as a shortage led many early settlers to leave for better farmland. However, a group of determined residents remained. Frustrated with Springville's inattention to their irrigation problems, they formed the Mapleton Canal Reservoir and Irrigation Company. Although it is unclear when the company was formed, this ledger suggests that it may have been approximately 1889. Continuing friction with Springville caused Mapleton residents to petition to become an independent town, which resulted in the creation of Mapleton on September 1, 1901.
