Beard, Collins, Fisher and Weaver families of Illinois and Ohio papers

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: MSS 339

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of handwritten letters, family histories, genealogies, deeds, wills, cash receipts, statements, mementoes, and a draft exemption of Joseph Weaver between 1816-1901. The materials were created by the Beard, Collins, Fisher, and Weaver families of Illinois and Ohio. Joseph Weaver was exempted from the draft during the American Civil War because he was able to get a substitute. This Joseph Weaver may have been Joseph Myrtle Weaver (1832-1913), an American author. Probably, the Collins Family collected the following items: letters, deeds, bill of sales or receipt, will and testament of Edward Collins, plus the genealogy of the Fisher, Collins, Beard and Weaver Families which shows closer connection to the Edward Collins family than any of the others. Most of the letters are in Illinois, and Ohio.

Biographical / Historical

Letters in the collection were between the Beard, Collins, and Fisher families, who were all related. It appears that Thomas Beard and Thalia Collins were brother and sister and Thalia Collins was the mother of Fanny Fisher. The Weaver's are apparently related, but not clear as to how. Other family relationships as follows: L. Collins was the son of Thalia Collins; Hannah was the sister of Thalia; Anna Collins was the mother of Ann E. Collins; Hannah is also either the sister to Edward or Thalia Collins; Jedediah Beard was the father of Amy; Thalia Collins appears to be the mother of Thomas Collins; Selina Beard was the aunt of Fanny Fisher and apparently the sister of Thalia Collins; and Thalia appears to be the mother of Minerva Collins. Various events of the Civil War are mentioned because both Thomas Beard and Edward Collins were in the army, also Jedediah Beard. Lincoln's assassination was mentioned.
