Brigham Smoot family papers
Scope and Contents
Collection contains journals, letters, transcripts, and other materials produced by members of the Smoot family in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The materials document the missionary service of Brigham Smoot in Samoa and Tonga, the missionary service of Gilbert Van Schoonhoven, the military service of Roland Nesbit Smoot during World War II, and various family events and issues that were occuring at the time. Dated 1866 to approximately 1949.

Biographical History
The Brigham Smoot (1869-1946) and Margaret Annella Nesbit (1880-1964) family began with their marriage in Salt Lake City, Utah, in approximately 1894.
The Brigham Smoot (1869-1946) and Margaret Annella Nesbit (1880-1964) family began with their marriage in Salt Lake City, Utah, in approximately 1894.They had two children who lived to maturity including Roland Nesbit Smoot and Annella Kerstina Smoot (later Doone). Roland was a member of the United States Navy, retiring as Vice Admiral. Annella was a musician, who specialized in the cello. Brigham and Annella were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Brigham in particular came from a prominent Church family: he was a son of Abraham O. Smoot, the mayor of Salt Lake City and the first head of BYU's Board of Trustees. Brigham served a mission in Tonga and Samoa. The family lived in Pennsylvannia, Utah, Idaho, and California.
