Scope and Contents

Photocopy and typescript of a letter from Martin to John Melling, dated April 9, 1849. Letter is also signed by a "John Case" or "John Cane." It mentions briefly the expulsion from Nauvoo and travel to Council Bluffs as well as his being enlisted into the Mormon Battalion. Details all the mileage of his journeys as a member of the Battalion and finally his release and entry into the Salt Lake Valley. Mentions the death and burial of his daughter Eliza Susannah. Also bears his testimony of the gospel.

Biographical History

Edward Martin (1818-1882) was a photographer in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Edward Martin was born November 18, 1818 in Lancashire, England. He was a 3rd corporal in Company C of the Mormon Battalion. He was ordained to the 24th Quorum of the Seventies of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on October 9, 1844. He worked as a painter in Salt Lake City and died August 1882.
