Biographical / Historical

Liberty Jail is a prison in Liberty, Missouri, where Joseph Smith, Jr., his brother Hyrum, Sidney Rigdon, and several of their associates were incarcerated from November 20, 1838 to April 9, 1839, under very severe conditions of mistreatment. Sections 121, 122, and 123 of the Doctrine and Covenants were recorded while Joseph was being held there. The Beehive House was constructed in 1854 and the Lion House was built in 1856 by Brigham Young in Salt Lake City, Utah, to house his family. Lyman Wight was a leader of the Latter-day Saints in Daviess County, Missouri in 1838. The Prophet Joseph Smith received the golden plates at Cumorah Hill from the Angel Moroni in 1823.
