Scope and Contents
Collection consists of four Downing Investment Company ledgers covering the period between 1905 and 1912, with the exception of 1908. The ledgers document mining activities at a series of mines in Cripple Creek, Colorado and Goldfield, Nevada.

Biographical History
The Downing Investment Company was owned and operated by Warwick Miller Downing and James M. Downing. Warwick Downing was a lawyer, born in Illinois in 1875. He was the son of James M. Warwick and Ella Margaret Summers Downing. Prior to entering business with his son Warwick, James was a real estate developer. Warwick Miller Downing graduated from East Denver High School in 1891 and from the University of Michigan Law School in 1895. He was assistant city attorney as well as special counsel for Denver. He also served as attorney for the State Land Board and was a member of the Denver Park Board. He married Emma Aimee Leet, daughter of John E. Leet, who for many years was connected with the Denver press and was also involved in the real estate business.
