James Stewart papers
Scope and Contents
Collection contains personal and professional papers of actor James Maitland "Jimmy" Stewart, including audiovisual materials. These materials document Stewart's activities as an actor in major motion pictures, television, and radio, as well as his service in the Army Air Corps in WWII, later service as an Air Force pilot, and general interest in the military and aviation. Collection also includes materials on James Stewart’s civic and philanthropic activities, the Jimmy Stewart Museum, and tributes, events, and awards honoring Stewart. Materials date from between 1862 and 1997.

Biographical / Historical
James Maitland "Jimmy" Stewart (May 20, 1908–July 2, 1997) was an American film and stage actor, best known for his self-effacing persona. Over the course of his career, he starred in many films widely considered classics and was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning one in competition and receiving one Lifetime Achievement award. He was a major MGM contract star. He also had a noted military career as a World War II Army Air Corps and Vietnam War Air Force Reserve veteran, who rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the United States Air Force Reserve.
