Administrative History
Safeway Stores, Inc. began in Los Angeles in 1912 as a small corner grocery store belonging to Sam Seelig. This one store grew into a company of 71 stores in 1922 and in 1925 the company held a competition to rename the chain. The result was the name Safeway, a name that reflects the orignal slogan to Drive the Safeway; Buy the Safeway.
In 1926 the Safeway company merged with the Skaggs Companies, thereby creating the largest chain of grocery stores west of the Mississippi. Safeway Stores, Inc. continued to expand and to obtain international markets as well as domestic ones.
