Biographical History

Phineas Leland Whipple (1792-1844) was an American lawyer and a preacher.

Phineas Leland Whipple was born January 6, 1792 in Grafton, Massachusetts, to Jonathan Whipple (1763-1839) and Lydia Leland (1767-1847). He graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York, in 1816, after which he studied law and passed the New York State Bar on May 14, 1819. He then practiced law for one year and became the President of the Fairfield Academy at Fairfield, Connecticut. While there he decided to pursue the study of Divinity. He was ordained on September 21, 1822 by Bishop Hobart at Saint Paul’s in New York City. He then preached in the New York area from the 1820s to the 1840s. He also served as Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Lansingburgh, Renssalaer County, New York, and Rector of St. Thomas Church in Bath, Stueben County, New York. Reverend Whipple was also a Trustee of the Institute for Lansingburgh from 1833 to 1837.

Reverend Whipple married Alida Van Antwerp, daughter of Daniel Louis Van Antwerp and Hannah (Van Zandt) Van Antwerp on May 20, 1819. The couple had three children. Reverend Phineas Leland Whipple died on October 5, 1844 at Bath, Steuben County, New York of bilious fever. He is buried at the Trinity Church cemetery in Lansingburgh, New York.
