Scope and Contents

Collection contains field work reports of folklore related to speech. Items were collected by students in folklore classes at Brigham Young University and Utah State University from 1958 to 2020.

Digital collections (2016-2020) can be accessed at https://lib.byu.edu/collections/wilson-folklore-archive/. Most of the items are typewritten, but a few of the older items are handwritten. Many of the items contain a description of how, when, and where they were collected. The jokes contain social and cultural contexts to explain their humor.

It is the responsibility of the researcher to obtain any necessary copyright clearances. Permission to publish material from the Wilson Folklore Archives must be obtained from the Supervisor of Reference Services and/or the L. Tom Perry Special Collections Board of Curators.

Physical items are arranged into 14 series: 1. Collection of proverbs, proverb-like sayings, and homilies 1959-2013. 2. Collection of proverbial comparisons 1971-2008. 3. Collection of children's rhymes and sayings, 1966-2009. 4. Collection of fun and humorous rhymes and sayings, 1958-2013. 5. Collection of occupational and avocational rhymes and sayings, 1961-2013. 6. Collection of written rhymes, poetry, and sayings. 7. Collection of parodies, 1970-2011. 8. Collection of folk speech, 1964-2013. 9. Collection of colloquialisms, 1968-1993. 10. Collection of phrase substitutes, 1970-1992. 11. Collection of farcical rhymes, 1970-1990. 12. Collection of wellerisms, tongue twisters. and pick-up lines, 1971-2007. 13. Collection of folk poetry, 1980-1997. 14. Collection of spoonerisms or shaggy dog stories, 1970-2006.

Custodial History

Personal narratives in the collection were generally collected from informants by students in Brigham Young University folklore classes. These narratives were submitted for class, then submitted to the William A. Wilson Folklore Archives at Brigham Young University.
