Scope and Contents

Collection contains jokes, anecdotes, folktales, formula tales, and tall tales. Items were collected by students in folklore classes at Brigham Young University and Utah State University from 1956 to 2019. Most of the items are typewritten, but a few of the older items are handwritten. Many of the items contain a description of how, when, and where they were collected. The jokes contain social and cultural contexts to explain their humor.

Arranged in five series: 1. Collection of animal folktales, 1961-2014. 2. Collection of ordinary folktales, 1961-2019. 3. Collection of jokes and anecdotes, 1956-2019. 4. Collection of formula tales, 1966-2009. 5. Collection of tall tales, 1959-2009.

Custodial History

Personal narratives in the collection were generally collected from informants by students in Brigham Young University folklore classes. These narratives were submitted for class, then submitted to the William A. Wilson Folklore Archives at Brigham Young University.
