Scope and Contents note
Materials contain papers relating to Carl E. Panhorst's service in the U.S. Army during World War II. Includes a handwritten account summarizes his training and service in various areas of Europe. Writes about his injuries and awards and his contact with his family and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Typed letter (2001) tells of his service in the Coast Guard from 1936 to 1939 as a seaman on the "Itasca". Relates his experiences trying to help guide Amelia Earhart and contact with the Japanese prior to the war. Briefly talks about his faith. Also includes a photocopied news article from the Herald titled, "Provoan says he heard Earhart's final words" (1994) detailing his role in trying to guide Earhart, his role in trying to find her, and his claim to be the last one to hear her voice. Dated 1994, 2001.
