Scope and Contents

Contains an autobiography written by David Booth Gottfredson covering his birth, childhood, growing up years, marriage, schooling at both the University of Utah and the University of Washington in St. Louis, Missouri, his internship and residency in Salt Lake City, practice in Richfield, Utah, and service in World War I, the American Legion, and World War II. The autobiography includes summaries of events, information on his family members, particularly wife Irma Grainger Gottfredson, and various correspondences. Includes stories and correspondence from his experience as a Colonel and Surgeon in World War II while stationed in Morocco, Africa and Naples, Italy between March and December of 1943, when he was diagnosed with a heart condition. Describes his journey home from service in World War II and eventual discharge in April of 1944. Included are family events such as Marjorie joining the WAC, Joyce's 1955 marriage, Susan's wedding in 1956, David Booth Jr.'s return to home from living in a hospital and his death in 1954 and the passing of both Alice A. K. H. Gottfredson and Eleanor Bringhurst Grainger. Describes David Sr.'s work as a doctor in the Salt Lake Clinic. Includes the birth of several grandchildren, the death of Benjamin Christopher Grainger, family vacations to Hawaii, Canada, and California, other various weddings, mission farewells, birthdays and family celebrations, and David’s continued work at the Salt Lake Clinic through 1963. Describes personal and family events such as vacations, his career at the Salt Lake Clinic, and he and Irma's 45th wedding anniversary in 1967. Includes duplicated correspondence and notes. Discusses his life and post-retirement schedule, family visits, and religious events, and inserts correspondence written either by him or to him. Gives summaries of events and daily schedules, discusses family and health issues, and includes correspondence between David and Irma and their children. Also includes a compilation prepared by Irma and her daughters following David's death, and is composed mostly of correspondence written by David, issues of the weekly ward publication, "Footsteps," and church meeting programs and wedding announcements.
