Clinton Larson military correspondence, 1918-1919
Scope and Contents
Contains correspondence between Clinton Larson and Lillian Foster (Larson), with a small amount of correspondence from various authors, including family members and friends of Lillian and Clinton. Clinton joined the army and began training at an aviation camp in Waco, Texas, in early 1918, schooling at the Military School of Aeronautics in Austin, Texas, during April and May of 1918, and further training and army service at Kelly Field, Texas, from late May of 1918 to January of 1919. At Kelly Field, Clinton worked as the athletic director and track and field coach. During the summer of 1918, Clinton competed in various track meets, some on army bases in Texas, and others in the Eastern United States (New York City, Baltimore, etc.). In September 1918, Clinton attended a competition in New York, and then was married to Lillian Foster on September 26 in Salt Lake City, Utah, before returning to Kelly Field. This correspondence reflects these events and the experiences of Clinton in the army after his marriage to Lillian. The couple also discusses the impending end to the war and religious issues.
