Scope and Contents

Materials contain papers relating to Lina Jane Stratton Garret, who served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II from 1941 to 1946. Contains Garret's account of her military service (2003). She talks about joining the army and receiving orders to report to Louisiana for training. Talks about traveling overseas on an old British cruise liner and living in Casablanca, Rabat, the capital of French Morocco, Tunis, and Oran. Also discusses being stationed in Monte Cessina with the 11th Field Hospital and her living conditions there. Recalls the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius while in Italy and talks about the fun the she had traveling through Italy. Describes conditions and equipment at Naples and Anzio Beach and the hard work that she did there. Describes other areas of Italy such as St. Tropaz and Lirvorno. Talks about becoming sick and then returning to her original unit, despite orders to join a new unit. Finally discusses the end of the war and the positive impact of serving in the war. Also contains photocopied photos of nurses in France and Italy (1944-1945). Also contains photocopied news article regarding her reception of the Bronze Star Medal (1945). Also contains photocopied Certificate of Service (1946) and other service documents (1941-1945). Materials were collected as part of the Nurses at War Project. Dated 1941-2003.
