You are what you eat : arguments for identity in creative food marking / Melissa Brown, 2003
Scope and Contents note
Brown finds a connection between college students' practice of marking their food artistically and the older practices of ownership markings in cattle branding and heraldry. She believes that artistic markings of ownership often share several common themes: they involve artistic elaboration on a name, showcase symbols that represent hobbies or occupations of a family or person, indicate a person's values and desires, describe a person's physical characteristics, or allude to a person's religious beliefs. She suggests that branding of all sorts fulfills the need to emphasize ownership and personality in an expressive or creative way. Created by Melissa Brown when she was enrolled in Jacqueline Thursby's English 667 course in Winter 2003.
