Biographical History

From the Collection:

Maurice W. Riley (1911-1997) was a violist who served as the American Viola Society President from 1981 to 1986.

Maurice Winton Riley was born November 24, 1911 in Kansas City, Missouri. He studied music at Colorado State Teachers College. Maurice taught in public school and served in World War II. He went back to school at Northern Colorado University and the University of Michigan and earned master's degrees. Throughout his academic career, Maurice published over 732 scholarly articles. He hosted the first International Viola Congress in America at Michigan University in 1975 and later became a member of the Board of Directors.
