Scope and Contents

Diary written by Oliver Boardman Huntington between April 1849 and September 1856. Entries describe his daily routine during an overland journey east in 1852, which included violent encounters with Indians. Describes difficult family relations with his wife and her parents on an 1852 trip. Huntington also writes of his participation in exploring the route to Carson Valley, Nevada in 1853, his mission to the Ute Indians in 1855, and his part of an exploring expedition in 1856. He lived in the St. George, Utah, area for two years and later returned to Springville, Utah, to teach school. There are many gaps in the record. Diary includes references to prominent Latter-day Saints such as Joseph Smith, Orson Hyde, Heber C. Kimball, Zina and Presendia Huntington.
