Bert Gividen papers, 1953-2005
Scope and Contents note
Materials contain memoir of Bert Gividen recounting experiences in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Also contains notes from the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice Signing in Seoul, which Gividen attended, and a ten-page account of his trip to Seoul to renew a Russian visa while on an Latter-day Saint mission. In the war memoir, Gividen describes enlistment and training. Describes his experiences as an active Latter-Day Saint soldier, meetings he attended, Harold B. Lee's visit to Korea, and how he was received by the other men in his battalion. The account continues to describes events post-ceasefire, including efforts to educate the men while still in Korea, Describes how this resulted in 19-year-old Gividen teaching U.S. History as well as ESL (English as a Second Language) to the Puerto Rican soldiers. Dated 1953-2005.
