File contains materials relating to the service of S. Robert Tanner in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a fighter pilot. Materials contain photocopied photographs, photocopied military document, photocopied handwritten letters, photocopied telegrams, and photocopied maps. He tells of his being accepted into the Naval Aviation Cadet training program, his training, combat, and time spent missing in action in the Philippines. Describes the experience on his first combat mission when he was shot down over Luzon and spent over two months evading the Japanese with the help of Filipino natives and soldiers in the area who were resisting the Japanese. Filled with photographs, letters, and telegrams. Details how his faith helped him during this time. He also speaks often of his then fiancé, Kathie, and the relationship they shared as he served his country. Dated 1941-2000.
