Scope and Contents

Materials include photocopied photographs, photocopied newspaper clippings and memoir of Thomas Wayne Sunderland. Recounts his experiences from his being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941 to his medical release in 1945 due to contracting malaria and hepatitis. He speaks of his training in Fort Lewis, Washington, and of being on a ship bound for Pearl Harbor the day it was bombed in December of 1941. Describes later learning that Japanese submarines were searching for them, and had sunk a cargo ship they thought to be the troop transport Sunderland was aboard. Also included are over fifty photocopied photographs of his time in the military. Dated 1941-1945 and approximately 2000.
