Administrative History

The Herpetologists' League (1946-present) is an international organization established by New York-born California citizen Chapman Grant in studying the science of Herpetology - the biology of reptiles and amphibians. They're best known for their scholarly journals "Herpetologica" and "Herpetological Monographs."

The Herpetologists' League is an international body of scientists established in 1946 by New York-born California citizen Chapman Grant dedicated to the science of Herpetology - the biology of amphibians and reptiles. After publishing "Herpetologica," in 1936, he decided to create an organization with scientists dedicated to the subject - eventually handing the control of the scholarly journal (which is still in print by the League today) to Brigham Young University professor Wilmer W. Tanner. Under the leadership of university professors and zoo curators throughout the United States, they have held meetings throughout North America and Brazil and have created two scholarly journals dedicated to the science of Herpetology: "Herpetologica" (a quarterly journal established in 1936 containing research papers and essays on the topic) and "Herpetological Monographs" (an annual journal established in 1982 publishing articles and syntheses on the science).
