Vernon Tipton interview, 1999-2001
Scope and Contents note
Materials contain a transcript of a film interview with Vernon Tipton regarding his service in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from 1942-1945. Describes a mission where he was shot down over France, rescued by Germans, and taken to Stalag Luft III. Also talks about being in solitary confinement, meeting with other Latter-Day Saints men for church services and friendship, and being marched to another camp as the Russian army got closer. Describes his escape with another Latter-Day Saints member until they were recaptured and sent to a third prisoner-of-war camp where they were finally liberated by General Patton. Talks about a bombing mission over Ploesti, Romania, and then going back to distribute food and clothing to the poor. Discusses the difficulty in understanding why some were shot down while others were spared and explains how living during the Depression had probably prepared many men to face the challenges of the war. Finally discusses the lessons that he learned, such as respect for life, and the positive effect of the Word of Wisdom during his service. Dated 1999-2001.
