Scope and Contents

Materials contain a memoir detailing Matheson's military experiences in the U.S. Army during World War II. Covers his induction training. Discusses his involvement with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints during training and in his combat theater. Lists his assignments and describes his transfer to England with his B-24 crew. Discusses his first and second bombing missions. Details Matheson's period of imprisonment in Stalag I, a German prisoner-of-war camp in Barthe, Germany. Discusses the living conditions in the camp, treatment received at the hands of the German guards, and the prisoners' eventual liberation under the Soviet Army. Also includes a transcript of a conversation wherein Matheson provides more detail concerning living conditions in the prison camp. Contains humorous excerpts from letters written to fellow prisoners-of-war, photocopies of Matheson's sketches, photocopies of mail sent to the camps, Matheson's prisoner-of-war documents (in German), "v-mail" sent home by him, letters and telegrams to his parents notifying them of their son's status as a prisoner-of-war, and original photographs showing him in full military dress. Photocopied photographs throughout the memoir show Matheson in military dress, with his bomber crew and plane, and also of the prisoner camp. Dated 1944-2002.
