Scope and Contents
Typewritten journal includes nearly daily entries from January 1 to August 31, 1915. Begins and ends with Talmage in Salt Lake City, Utah. Most entries are of meetings, lectures, funerals, and other duties pertaining to his calling as an Apostle, particularly attending stake conferences, and his position as director of Deseret Museum. Mentions ordinations and setting apart of bishops, missionaries, and others in priesthood callings. Includes newspaper clippings and programs related to Talmage. Continues to report on the war in Europe and the Church's response in providing aid. Includes mention of completion of writing "Jesus the Christ" on April 19, and includes notices on its publication later that year. Also includes the proof sheets of Talmage's April 1915 general conference address titled "The Son of Man," which is how it was actually delivered, although parts of it were altered or omitted in the published conference report. Mentions sinking of "Lusitania" in May, and America's eventual involvement in the Great War. Also includes mention of construction of Church Administration Building, which began with the laying of the cornerstone in May. Dated January-August 1915.

Originals restricted. Digital copy of the first twelve of thirty volumes of Talmage's personal journals (1879-1911) available online. Unedited typescripts and microfilm of all thirty volumes also available.

The literary rights to the Talmage collection rest with the Harold B. Lee Library and the Talmage family. Permission to publish material from the James E. Talmage collection must be obtained from the Supervisor of Reference Services at specialcollections@byu.edu.
