Note on verso: "175. Camels in Soviet Pao An, North Shensi. In the areas of China's Northwest now occupied by the Red Army transportation is accomplished by horses, camels, steers, and miles. Here are some camels from a Red caravan, grazing outside the walls of the provisional Red capital. Standing in front of them is the Red soldier who acted for a while as the photographer's guide. A native of Shensi, 19 years old, the son of poor peasants, he joined the Red Army when it reached his district and redistributed the land. During the battle of Wayapao last year he was wounded by a bullet which apparently entered his heart, passing straight through his shoulder, emerging cleanly from his back. Untroubled by this today, he is regarded by Red doctorsas the miracle man, for none can understand how he survived, with no apparent vital hurt from this bull's-eye shot scored by the enemy."
