Biographical / Historical
Karl Malden was born March 22, 1912 in Chicago, Illinois, to a Czech mother and a Serbian father. He worked in the steel industry until 1934, when he left to attend the Arkansas State Teacher's College and the Goodman Theater Dramatic School. He then went to New York to pursue acting.
In New York, Malden worked in plays under the direction of Elia Kazan. He served in World War II, and when he came back he was in A Streetcar Named Desire, for which he won an Oscar. He went on to star in dozens of films including Pollyanna, How the West was Won, and Patton.
In 1988 Malden became the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and held that position for five years. Karl Malden died July 1, 2009, in Los Angeles, California.
