General

Note on verso: "88. Mohammedan troops of the People's Liberation Army. Several million Chinese Mohammedans live in China's Northwest, and Chiang Kai-shek hoped to use their religious antagonisms against Chinese to stop the Red Army in their territory. But the Chinese Soviets guaranteed them religious freedom, and in addition gave them complete autonomy, driving out the Kuomintang tax-collectors, and 'liquidating' the Chinese usurers among them, as well as giving the peasatns arms to fight their own Mohammedan landlords. These are the answers to many a Mohammedan congregation's prayers, and instead of ther fierce 'holy war' against the Bolshevik Chinese predicted by Nanking's generals, Moslem and Chinese Reds are uniting on a common platform of 'Down with Japanese Imperialism,' and 'Down with the Tax-Collecting Kuomintang!' This is a Red Mohammedan company in a village near Weichow, Ninghsia Province. Photo by Edgar Snow, 1936."
