Note on verso: "194, and 196. Typical of North Shensi is this narrow valley near An Tsai. Farmers of the Northwest mostly dwell in Yao fang, or 'cave houses', built into the cliffs of loess for which this region is famous. 'Yao fang' are spacious, dry, and easily built homes, cool in summer, warm in winter, and for the Reds have the additional advantage of being bombproof. Nanking's fleet of airbombers are therefore useless in attacks on present Red districts, being able only to destroy the towns, largely owned by officials and merchants. Photo by Edgar Snow, 1936."

General

Stamp on verso: "PHOTOGRAPH by EDGAR SNOW."
