General

Note on verso: "30. White to red is the history of P'eng Teh-huai, here shown mounted on a captured Ninghsia pony. Formerly a General in Chiang Kai-shek's army, Peng Dehuai organized an uprising in Hunan in 1928, and took two Kuomintang regiments with him to join the Red Army. In 1930 he captured Changsha, capital of Hunan Province. He is today Commander-in-Chief of the First Front Red Army, which consists of 35,000 men, largely centered in Kansu and Ninghsia. At the age of 38, Peng is still a youngster physically, seldom rides a horse, prefers marching, and in the long trek from Kiangsi, in which he led his army through a blockade of half a million government troops, he walked at least 6,000 miles while directing the command. Chiang Kai-shek will pay you $100,000 cash for Commander-in-chief Peng, dead or alive. To this doughty Commander Generalissimo Chiango once offered $200,000 if he would turn to the Kuomintang white army. Photo by Edgar Snow, 1936."
