Note on verso: "192. RED CALL TO THE ANTI-JAPANESE FRONT seems symbolized in this picture. The Red Army recently changed its name to the 'Chinese people's vanguard Anti-Japanese Red Army," which name appears on the flagstaffs as in the Chinese writing on this one. Since its manifesto of August, 1935., offering to cooperate with all parties and armed forces in Chinaagainst the Japanese, the Red Army and Communist Party have been strenuously campaigning for the formation of a 'People's United Front', to resume the anti-imperialist revolution of all classes as in the 1925-27 period. In February, 1936, the Red Army began a march across the province of Shansi in an attempt to begin an anti-Japanese war of resistance, but were prevented from precipitating this by a cordon sanitaire of ten divisions of Nanking troops rushed thence by Chiang Kai-shek to prevent the Reds from reaching the Hopei-Chahar area. They now hope to come into conflict with Japanese-controlled troops on the northwest front, where the Red Army is now fighting Kuomintang troops in the rear, as the vanguard moves ever nearer to their destined conflict with the Japanese elements in Inner Mongolia.
