Scope and Contents
Letter from Kane to President Buchanan, copy (in Elizabeth Wood Kane's hand?), incomplete, relates the happenings of his visit to Salt Lake City and his many conversations with Brigham Young, the army's refusal to accept the salt Young sent up to them, massacre of Saints at Salmon River, Mormon fears "that they would have Illinois and Missouri over again," describes the army as "professional gamblers and professional anti- Mormons who had been feeding on hard beef, whiskey and a great deal of tobacco," Kane is not satisfied that the officers will be able to control their soldiers or that the Mormons will be given impartial justice.
