Note on verso: "68. RED CADETS HAVE THEIR THEATRE, TOO. Even in the isolated backward province of Shensi, where song and theatre were practically unknown before the Red Army arrived, there are now many primitive theatres and stages for performances of what they call now the 'Anti-Japanese Theatre.' Note the Latinized form of Chinese in the signs over the theatre and in the posters showing Latinized slogans-- part of the Soviet campaign to instal mass education by use of the Roman alphabet instead of the difficult Chinese ideograph. The Soviets claim that real mass education is impossible in China without such an innovation, as mastery of the Chinese character requires at least ten years of hard study. Photo by Edgar Snow, 1936."
