General
Note on verso: "212. Young Commanders of the First Red Army Corps with one of their 'little devil' mascots seated in the middle of the front row. At the extreme right, seated, is a young commander who travelled with the photographer for about a week. A red for eight years, he is a native of Kuangsi province, joined this army in Kwangtung. He talked very earnestly about problems connectedwith the war against Japan, believed the Reds would be the first to go to the front, lamented that he would never see his home in Kuangsi again. Standing, first row, second from left is another acquintance of photographer, a native of Yulin, Shensi, son of a merchant, and a middle-school graduate, who was once proselytyzed by Christian missionaries, learned a little English. He is now with the Reds' 'Communication Corps.' Reproduction by Edgar Snow of Soviet photo taken at Chih Ying, Shensi, July 1936."
