General

Note taped on verso: "Photo # 12343 Date: 1911 Location: Navajo Indian Reservation Related Photos: 31293, 11691 and 21976 Description: Herd of Navajo sheep and goats. Prior to federal-mandated stock reduction in the 1930s and 1940s, Navajo families maintained large herds of sheep and goats, resulting in severe overgrazing and soil erosion. Wool was used for rug weaving or sold in bulk through reservation trading posts. Both sheep and goats were important part of the Navajo diet. According to Navajo tradition, the sheep and goats belonged to the women and children were often given responsibility for tending them.
