Biographical History

Afton M. Hansen was born September 25, 1925, in Mayfield, Utah to Melvin J. and Enid Hansen. After graduating from high school, Hansen was drafted into the United States Navy to serve in WWII. He served three and a half years as an airplane mechanic and served in both European and Pacific theaters. After being released from the Navy, Hansen attended Snow College, then Brigham Young University where he received both his BS and MS degrees. He went on to receive his PhD from Utah State University. He taught at Snow College for over 30 years where he was voted Teacher of the Year numerous times. While working for the United States Forest Service, Dr. Hansen invented a level used build terraces for flood control. He passed away on June 15, 2009, in Mayfield, Utah.
