Note on verso: "19. The Red Army reaches The Great Wall of China. Part of the 78th Division, 15th Army Corps, of the 'Chinese People's Anti-Japanese Red Army', photographed on the day on the day it captured Tingpien, historic gateway to Mongolia, on the Great Wall, June 17th, 1936. Note numerous automatic rifles (front row) and machine-guns of this modernly equipped army of revolutionaries. Chinese Reds now hold a long stretch of the Great Wall, extending from Shenmu, in extreme northeast of Shensi, clear to Shan Tan, in far western Kansu. 'Hold that Wall' may become the battle-cry of the Chinese people to the Reds here, who will be the first line of national defense if Japanese troops reinforce 'puppet' Mongol-Chinese armies now fighting for possession of Suiyan province, which borders the Great Wall near Red territory. Tingpien, city through which once poured the Mongol hordes who conquered China, was captured by the Reds in June, 1936. Reproduction of Soviet photo, by Edgar Snow."
