Note on verso: "132. 'Long live the Chinese revolution'! this young Red Vanguard shouted to the photographer as he snapped this picture of the Red Salute. The Red Vanguards burst into slogans and song on the least provocation, and make the Red areas the liveliest part of China. The place is literally alive with them. This boy is one of the local Shensi youth; there are 50,000 of them now organized in the Shensi-Kansu area in the Young Vanguards, or Youth 'Pioneers', of the ages from 14 to 23 years (this is actually 13 to 22, as Chiense count one year higher than the Western fashion in reckoning age). Photo by Edgar Snow, 1936."
