Biographical / Historical

Geoffrey Gibbs (born 1940) is an accomplished composer whose works have been performed throughout the world, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., throughout New England, Russia, and South America.

Geoffrey Gibbs was born in 1940 in New York. During his high school years he studied composition with Elie Siegmeister. Later, at Eastman School of Music, he studied composition with Bernard Rogers and Howard Hanson. He also studied voice with Yi-Kwei Sze and Julius Huehn. In 1974 he received his doctorate in composition and voice from Eastman. Prior to that, in 1965, Gibbs began teaching composition at the University of Rhode Island.

Gibbs retired in 2001 but continues to compose and give yearly concerts at the University of Rhode Island.
