Note on verso: "145, 146, and 147. 'Saturday Brigades' at work in the Soviet Districts. This 'collective' activity will astound those who believe that all Chinese are incapable of cooperative enterprises. The 'Saturday Brigades' are organized to move through the countryside to help the farmers whose sons are with the Red Army, this being called 'Red Family Work.' They also cultivate the Red Army's own farms to provide food for it, most of these farms being reclaimed wasteland in the Northweset. The 'Saturday Brigades' are a part of the Communist Youth work. In the Soviet districts of Kansu and Shensi about 40,000 boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 14 have been organized into 'Youth Brigades', and another 50,000 from 14 to 23 years of age into 'Youth Vanguards' These boys and girls enjoy their collective work and sing cheerfully as they mach from farm to farm. They flail, weed, cultivate, harvest, sweep and plough. Some of the boys carry pistols on their hips such a the one shown in No. 147, where another has an ammunition belt on in the far left-hand corner. They all wear Red Arm uniforms and belts Red-starred caps."
