Biographical / Historical

Robert Beale (1541-1601) served as ambassador to France starting in 1570, special envoy of queen Elizabeth to the German Lutheran princes 1576, Secretary of State 1578 and 1581-1583, and was in parliament from Dorchester in 1586 and 1588. In addition, he served under Leicester in 1588 in the Netherlands probably with the transport department. As a scholar he is known for two books which maintain the principle of toleration and for works glorifying marriage and women.

Anna, Electress, consort of August I, Elector of Saxony (1532-1585) was a Danish princess from the House of Oldenburg. She was a daughter of king Christian III of Denmark and Norway and his wife Dorothea of Saxe-Lauenburg. Through her marriage with Augustus of Saxony she became Electress of Saxony. She was renowned for her knowledge of plants and her skill in the preparation of herbal remedies, and contributed to the development of farming and horticulture in Saxony. She was a major influence in the introduction of orthodox Lutheranism and played a role in the decision to persecute Calvinists.

Letter signed by Beale to Anna, Electress, consort of August I, Elector of Saxony. Written in Latin from Greenwich, England, 9 August 1581. In this letter, Beale informs the Electress that permission has been granted to Andreas and Valentinus Kragen to export cloth from England, despite the existing arrangements with the Hanseatic Merchants (the present license being an exception). This is evidently a retained copy of the letter, though it is written in a fine calligraphic "Italic" hand, and is subscribed and signed by Beale.
