Note on verso: "104. Mohammedan troops of the Chinese Red Army. Several million Mohammedans live in China's Northwest and Chiang Kai-shek hoped to use their religious antagonisms against Chinese to stop the Red Army in their territory. But the Soviets guaranteed them religious freedom and in addition gave them compelte autonomy, driving out the Kuomintang tax-collectors, and 'liquidating' the Chinese usurers among them, as well as giving the peasants arms to fight their own Mohammedan landlords. These are the answers to many of Mohammedan congregation's prayeres, and instead of the fierce 'holy war' against the Chiense Bolsheviks predicted by Nanking's generasl, Moslem and Chinese Reds are uniting on a common platform 'Down with Japnaese Imperialism,' and 'Down with the Tax-Collecting Kuomintang!' This is a Red Mohammedan company in a village near Weichow, Ninghsia Province. Photo, Edgar Snow, 1936."
