Alvin Fielding Smith letters, 1905 April
Scope and Contents
Contains letters written by and ephemera from Alvin Fielding Smith to his wife, Amelia Atkins Smith, during his journey to England. Smith was called on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1905, and he details daily events and travel experiences in his letters, including mentions of his travel companions, such as LeGrand Richards. He writes while aboard a train belonging to the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad line, as well as from: Fort Wayne, Indiana; New York City, New York; Boston, Massachusetts; and aboard the S.S. Arabic of the White Star Line. In his letters to his family in Salt Lake City, Utah, he expresses his loneliness and longing for his wife Amelia, or "Millie," and baby daughter Ruth, or "Ruthie." He often states his faith and trust in his God that Amelia and Ruth will be protected, and that his mission will be successful. A pre-mission visit to Niagara Falls is also recorded. Dated April 17, 1905 - April 30, 1905.
