The Department of Educational Psychology (1972-1997) focused on special education, counseling/guidance, audiology and various forms of psychology.

The Department of Educational Psychology was established after the dissolution of the Department of Education in 1972. Department chairmen included: Darwin F. Gale (1972-1987), Ronald D. Bingham (1987-1988), Parley W. Newman (1988-1990), and Ronald D. Bingham (1990-1997).

The Department of Educational Psychology first included programs that led to the bachelor's degree in special education, and to graduate degrees-M.A., E.Ed., Ed.D., and Sixth-Year Specialist in the areas of school psychology, instructional psychology, counseling and guidance, instructional media, and special education. The Department later added degrees in audiology and speech language pathology. The Institute for Special Education was also part of the department. Teachers in this institute were trained to teach the mentally handicapped, learning disabled, visually handicapped, and emotionally handicapped children.

The Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (1997-2006) prepared students to be communication specialists in schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and other agencies and in private practice

The Department was established in 1997 within the David O. McKay School of Education. The chairman of the department was David L. McPherson who served from 1997 to 2006. In 2006, the department was renamed the Dept. of Communication Disorders.

The department offered BS, Minor, and MS degrees in both Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology

The Department of Speech and Dramatic Arts (1968-1975) offered courses in speech, dramatic arts, and communicative habilitation at Brigham Young University.

In 1968 the Department of Dramatic Arts and the Department of Speech were combined to form the Department of Speech and Dramatic Arts. This department helped students prepare to become teachers, directors, actors, clinicians, or members of any one of several related professions. This department focused on two separate subjects, speech and dramatic arts. The speech portion offered a public address major and selected courses for personal development in argumentation and debate, communication theory, discussion, public speaking, rhetoric, and speech criticism. The dramatic arts curriculum was designed to lead to professional competency in teaching on the secondary level, in acting, directing, or playwriting, or in technical theatre.

Lael J. Woodbury (1968-1972) and Parley W. Newman (1972-1975) served as department chairs until 1975 when the department was renamed the Department of Theatre and Cinematic Arts.
