Under the direction of Benjamin Cluff, principal from 1892-1903, the first professionally prepared teacher in physical education was hired--Maud May Babcock in the early 1900s. Eugene Roberts was hired in 1910 to run the physical education program and was very successful in raising the profile of physical education at the University. The Department of Physical Education was established in 1922 and has seen sustained growth over the years. In 2004 the name was changed to the Department of Exercise Sciences.
