Administrative History
The Young Mothers Council of Provo was formed in 1965 by Jo Bird, Stella Oaks, Odessa Allred Cullimore, and Lorena Chipman Fletcher. They formed the group to strengthen the homes and families of America, and to teach principles of respect and reverence for authority. The Young Mothers Council was a sub-group of the American Mothers Committee Incorporated in New York whose aim was to start several Young Mother's Councils across the nation. Classes, conferences, and workshops were held to educate parents and strengthen family ties. During 1965-1967 Jo Bird was president of the council. The group worked with KBYU to produce educational programs for parents. They also began working with PTAs of various elementary schools. During the 1967-1968 year they worked with the Eldred Center. Barbara Price became President in 1968 and they established the Eldred Center ballroom as a nursery for children. They established goals to give specific help to young children's behavior problems. In 1969 Jo Oaks was the President they began using the Women's Cultural Center for meetings. They received a national award during the 1969-1970 time periods. In 1970-1971 husbands began to be included in the evening sessions of the council.
