Administrative History

General Church Board of Education (est. 1888) governs the various schools and academies of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Today the Church Board of Education governs the Church Educational System (CES), including seminaries, institutes, and elementary and secondary schools. For institutions of higher education, the board works in conjunction with the boards of trustees for each of the institutions. Board members include the First Presidency, three members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the Senior President of the Seventy, the Relief Society general president, and the Young Women general president.

In its infancy the General Church Board of Education directed by a Superintendent of Church Schools. The position of Superintendent was eventually changed to Commissioner of Church Education in 1905.
